IBS is omething that is very different n different people. I diagnosed with IBS about a year ago. after all tests such as blood, urine, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, a few different X-rays, etc. I used to smoke so a few weeks ago finally I decided to quit and just after two weeks the IBS is almost gone!!! at least I can say 80% improvement. My IBS was everyday pain in the last 6 years. and I never tried to quit in these years! Finnaly I did it and it worked!

Ouch -- I feel ya! Yeah, I think changing the diet really helps. Nicotine let me be lazy with my eating habits -- after quitting I had to change my diet, adding a lot of fiber, cutting out junk foods, eating less processed crap, etc.

The biggest help for me: eating a bowl of cereal before bed.

Hey folks,
i am 22 years old and i have smoked for like 3 and a half years. smoked 8-10 cigarettes a day.. i quit cold turkey 22 days ago.. Initially i had those hunger cramps and felt like eating all day, and i did.. my diet improved magnificently but for the last one week i haven't felt good. i feel bloated all day long, feel like farting all day.. i have never felt so bad in my life.. It's like i am writing my heart out today.. i went to the doctor and he prescribed me a few pills.. i got to know that the pills he has prescribed me are for treating IBS... I was feeling very low that day, but i kept myself going.. I wondered that if i picked up smoking it might help me out.. but it's the conscience that doesn't let me pick that ciggy up..
I wonder when will i get well... i have never felt so alone and horrible in my life.. i wish i could get well soon.. But i won't let the will die... maybe there is some sunshine at the end of the tunnel...:D

I quit cold turkey 20 days ago after 18 years of smoking.

Week 2 was the worst with expelling the toxins, terrible pains, breathing issues, and feelings of depression. I also quit while my lungs were full of nasty bronchitis fluid and gunk. I think this made the detox worse as my body was expelling the virus and the cigarette toxins all at once.

Now I'm feeling terrific, except for near constant pains in the upper left side of my stomach. It feels like something between a cramp and a stabbing pain. No constipation and no bloating. I have noticed the pain seems worse when I'm sitting around the house idle. Fortunately it does not bother me when I sleep, and since I quit I feel more tired than ever before at night and have often been passing out an hour or two before my regular bed time.

Probiotics does seem to offer me some temporary relief, but mostly I'm just toughing it out.

I'm committed to staying tobacco free and I found this site to be very helpful in dealing with symptoms. I'll repost when the stomach pains finally clear up, and let everyone know how long that took.

I am standing here reading all your post and i could cry! I gave up smoking 10months ago after smoking for 20 years. I really wanted to get fit and healthy but instead i now suffer with stomach problems that are incredibly painful. I pretty much get it every day now! Years ago i used to drink red bull but eventually it really began to upset my tummy and the doctor said i may have IBS, but i was always okay as long as i stayed off red bull, crisps and champagne (which was a bit of a bugger!)
Now though i get it when i get stressed, or drink alcohol and it made me wonder if when i smoked and got stressed/nervous/excited etc obviously i would smoke which would calm me down however now i have nothing to calm me down perhaps that is the problem.
I am so grateful to find this site because when i said to my husband (who has never smoked) that i felt ill since i gave up, he thought that it was strange thought that not smoking could make me ill, and so now i am showing him this site when he comes home from work.
Thank you!!!!

This is an awesome article. My doctor recently told me I could possibly have IBS. Half a year ago, I quit smoking for 6 months and that's when all of this began. I had no idea quitting could cause it... but for the record, for anyone wondering--continuing to smoke does NOT make the IBS go away after you've already quit. I started smoking again and it actually got worse. (I didn't connect the two at the time--I had just started smoking again.)

I'm planning on quitting next week so. I'll try the diet of more fruits and veggies and less meat without cigarettes and let's hope it helps!

Cheers.

For those asking in the comments, I am the original poster: Toni from Blifaloo.com -- I'm in BC, Canada.

I gave birth to 3 children. The cramps I suffered after quitting nicotine hurt more than birth contractions!

My heart goes out to all you folks!

But, at least research is being done. Researchers and doctors are finally getting more and more aware of the link between our guts, brains and nicotine.
